ISSSB-International Summer School on Systems Biology
The Systems Biology approach to discover marine life:
from a big eye to a microscopic picture
10-14 October 2022
Biological systems are complex networks of biological entities such as organs, tissues, cells, organelles, macromolecular complexes, regulatory pathways and at macro scale individuals.Â
Oceans represent a perfect example of a biological system made of a huge numeber of interconnected biodiverse systems both as species and as niches. Understanding how their connections results in its health and equilibrium require a wide approach looking at it from all the possible angles.
Systems biology aims to provide a comprehensive view of the biological systems using an interdisciplinary integrated approaches from different scientific areas and technological, experimental and informatic skills.
Based on this holistic view, the aim of the school is to provide participants basic and advanced knowledge on Biodiversity, Ecological interactions, Evolutionary Genomics and Omic disciplines, to be used as an integrated approach applied to oceans for EcoEvoDevo studies and Biotech Applications.

Dr. Ida Orefice
Researcher, Ecosustainable Marine Biotechnology Department, Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn Napoli
Ida Orefice graduated in Chemistry at the University of Naples Federico II. She completed her PhD in Life Science and three years of PostDoc at SZN.
Current research interests are:
•Exploration of potential biotechnological applications of microalgal secondary metabolites and enzymes;
•Study the response of microalgae to biotic and abiotic stressors;
•Study the potential of marine diatoms for decontamination of seawater. environments
Dr. Giovanna Romano
Senior Researcher, Eco-sustainable Marine Biotechnology Department, Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn Napoli
Giovanna Romano graduated in Biological Sciences at the University of Naples Federico II. Scholarship holder in Biochemistry for six years and subsequently permanent researcher at the SZN.
Current research interest is the identification and exploitation of diatom-derived natural compounds for the development of new products for pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical and nutraceutical applications, with a special attention on the study of pathways involved in the biosynthesis of valuable molecules.

Dr. Angela Sardo
Technologist, Eco-sustainable Marine Biotechnology Department, Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn
Angela Sardo research activity is mainly focused on using marine microalgae as a source of highly valuable products, such as bioactive molecules and potentially marketable products (algal oils, algal flours). She is also expert of massive growth of diatoms tuning the physical and nutritional parameters of algal cultures to obtain different biochemical compositions, and, thus, different microalgal products. She is also interested in the development of processes aimed at improving both production and productivity of microalgae on laboratory, pre-industrial, and industrial scale. She currently cooperated with some industries to test the employment of microalgae to limit flue gas emissions in industrialised areas through their capacity to use carbon dioxide and nitric oxides as nourishment. In addition, she is currently investigating also the bioremediation of water bodies by employing the capability of microalgae to adsorb and/or to incorporate heavy metals.
